Clinical Training
This section of the NCTSN Learning Center includes tools and training resources that promote the dissemination and implementation of trauma-informed mental health treatment. Included in this section are the Core Curriculum for Childhood Trauma (CCCT) and the TOOLCIT Curriculum, and Trauma-Informed Interventions: Clinical Research Evidence and Culture-Specific Information Project.
Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to improve the relationships between children and caregivers in families involved in arguments, frequent conflict, physical force/discipline, or child physical abuse. This course is intended to introduce the model and serves as a pre-requisite for more intensive in-person training in AF-CBT.

The Attachment Vitamins online course is an interactive, self-paced e-learning course for those adults who often find themselves in the company of children aged zero to five and their families, including professionals such as early childhood educators and child care providers, public health workers, nurses and other medical providers, and case managers; and also for the caregivers of young children themselves. Co-created by Dr. Alicia Lieberman, author of The Emotional Life of the Toddler, and world-renown expert in the areas of parent-child attachment, child development, and trauma, Attachment Vitamins provides a clear and elegant overview of early social-emotional development with insights and suggestions to support healthy and mutually-satisfying child-caregiver relationships. During the course's nine modules, participants will learn about early childhood social-emotional development; the impact of stress and trauma; reflect on the possible meanings of children’s behaviors; explore the influence of culture on families' socialization goals; and become familiar with a number of strategies aimed to promote secure attachment and safe socialization practices.

The Not Lost in Translation: The Clinician-Interpreter Dyad in the Mental Health Setting course is intended as a companion piece to the Not Lost in Translation face-to-face or virtual training. This course is based on the resource, A Socio-Culturally, Linguistically-Responsive, and Trauma-Informed approach to Mental Health Interpretation, and is designed to increase the capacity and partnership of professional interpreters and mental health clinicians working together in order to improve quality and access of services for children, adolescents and families with no or limited English proficiency (LEP) and who have experienced trauma and are seeking mental health services.

Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) is the emotional distress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another. For child-serving professionals who are exposed to details of traumatic events in the context of their work, STS is a common occupational hazard. If we know more about STS, ways to process work-related trauma exposures, and organizational level strategies to become more STS-informed, the better prepared we are to mitigate and address STS as individuals and in our agencies. This course is for all child-serving professionals who are exposed to details of traumatic events and/or individuals suffering from post-traumatic distress in the context of their work. Through the content in this course you will learn the risks associated with working with individuals who are suffering with traumatic stress symptoms, strategies to reduce the impact of secondary traumatic stress (STS) and support wellness in staff, and finally, how addressing STS is an ethical mandate for organizations and individuals working in trauma-exposed environments.

This course contains interactive online lessons that lead you through the 12 Core Concepts for Understanding Traumatic Stress Responses in Children and Families. The Core Concepts are conceptual lenses used to better understand childhood trauma, its causes, effects, and strength-based systems approaches to case conceptualization and intervention planning. These lessons can assist NCTSN sites and members to understand foundational principles of childhood trauma.

Trauma Training for Early Childhood (TTEC) Online is a 4-hour interactive course that provides core concepts on trauma and young children in 15–20-minute lesson segments. This course complements and expands on other early childhood curriculums while uniquely centering issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion using a relational lens. This course is appropriate for any professional who has contact with young children and/or their families.

The Using the CANS-Trauma Comprehensive course offers providers ways to use the CANS-Trauma Comprehensive, a tool designed to support individual service, treatment planning, and evaluation of service systems.
