With so many streaming services and new releases appearing every week, I sometimes spend longer choosing a movie than actually watching one. I usually look at the trailer, genre, runtime, and a few reviews, but friends often recommend completely different things. What helps you decide when you’re choosing a movie for a quiet evening, especially when you want something enjoyable without spending half an hour scrolling?

I’ve started keeping a simple watchlist because otherwise I forget half the movies people recommend to me. Before choosing something, I usually check the trailer, runtime, genre, and a couple of different opinions. I sometimes browse tv guide magazine reviews as another way to discover movies I might have overlooked. I don’t always agree with reviews, though, because a film that seems average to someone else can still be exactly what I want on a lazy Sunday evening.
