The goal of the TOOLCIT curriculum is to support NCTSN sites as they implement, spread, and sustain evidence-based treatments, practices, interventions, and system changes to organizations that serve children and families who have experienced trauma. The curriculum is aimed at those directing, leading, advising, or serving as faculty for any collaborative implementation initiative including Learning Collaboratives, Learning Communities, and Breakthrough Series Collaboratives.

This webinar depicts a moment when Rose initially directs her feeling of being victimized toward her therapist. Rose expresses that therapist’s contact with her mother and school has increased the stigma and vulnerability she feels, and her sense that she’s not getting the support she needs. Rose sees the therapist as responsible for greater distress for both herself and her mother. This is a critical turning point in treatment, which illustrates the complexity of developmental trauma and raises questions as to whether the therapeutic relationship can be repaired. The therapist attempts to balance concerns of trust and safety in the context of Rose’s culture and the impact of developmental trauma across generations.

Describes applications of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for trauma-impacted lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/gender expansive, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth. These applications were developed during a year-long NCTSN learning community, and are provided in a TF-CBT LGBTQ Implementation Manual. They are currently being evaluated in an ongoing quality improvement project. Composite cases and preliminary outcome data are described.

Crossover youth—those involved simultaneously or successively in both the child welfare and juvenile justice systems—represent a population with specific risks and unique needs for trauma-informed services. In this webinar, the presenters will discuss the processes leading maltreated youth to become dually involved in the juvenile justice system and will describe the characteristics of crossover youth with a particular focus on those living in urban settings, including the highly disproportionate representation of ethnic minority youth and girls. Theories and research regarding the underlying developmental processes and trajectories that link childhood maltreatment to adolescent involvement in the juvenile justice system also will be presented. A clinical framework for trauma-informed services and trauma-specific therapeutic and rehabilitative services will then be described, including models for intervening at the levels of systems and institutions, as well as evidence-based approaches for treating traumatized families and individual youths.

Maya, a 9-year-old girl, was referred for therapy due to numerous instances of domestic violence by her father toward her mother (some of which she witnessed), physical abuse by her father, and possible sexual abuse with no specific disclosures. Both parents have extensive histories of substance abuse, including opioid and amphetamine use. Maya’s father is currently incarcerated for drug and violence-related crimes. Her mother was unable to consistently take care of Maya for the past few years due to substance abuse issues so Maya was removed from her care. Maya has two failed foster home placements due to significant aggressive and sexualized behavior. She is currently residing in a stable foster home and has begun to have monitored visits with her biological mother who was recently discharged from a drug rehabilitation program. Maya has attended therapy with this therapist for only a short time and recently, has begun to demonstrate more trauma-related play. This session illustrates how dysregulation and trauma processing can be exhibited in play, sometimes with significant distress for the child with developmental trauma. The critical dilemma involves to what extent the therapist helps a highly traumatized child to manage her distress versus engage in trauma processing.
Speakers will discuss the key causes, major consequences, and professional responses related to community violence and its traumatic stress-related impacts on youth, including: exploring the historic and contemporary causes of violence exposure among urban youth and their families, understanding the interrelated contexts of violence exposure that impact urban youth, and developing specific goals for implementing best practices for serving violence-exposed urban youth.

The Child Trauma Toolkit for Educators was developed to provide school administrators, teachers, staff, and concerned parents with basic information about working with traumatized children in the school system.
