In this webinar, viewers will meet Mr. Smith, a 27-year-old single father who works full-time as a health worker. He and his fiancé would like full custody of his 7-year-old son, Samuel. His son is under the care of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) after Samuel’s pre-school teacher reported that he was sleeping in class and arriving to school, on numerous occasions, unkempt and hungry. The school made multiple, yet unsuccessful attempts to meet and speak with Samuel’s mother, Ms. Johnson. Mr. Smith does not understand why DCF did not contact him first instead of placing Samuel in a foster home. He is now required to meet with a social worker, Mr. Muhammad, to “learn parenting skills.”

Childhood Traumatic Separation is a trauma in which children experience familial separation under sudden, chaotic, frightening circumstances and develop traumatic stress reactions. Unprecedented numbers of families are being separated at our southern border, and many children experience traumatic separation from close family members due to other circumstances. This webinar describes developmental, cultural, and clinical aspects of Childhood Traumatic Separation; similarities and differences between Childhood Traumatic Separation and Childhood Traumatic Grief (CTG); and how evidence-based trauma treatments for CTG can be applied for children with Childhood Traumatic Separation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased parental stress and rates of intimate partner violence, and contributed to heightened risk for vulnerable children to experience child maltreatment or to develop problematic sexual behaviors (PSB). Without effective treatment, these traumas can contribute to long lasting negative physical and mental health outcomes, but circumstances of the pandemic have created challenges to identifying these children. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially critical for clinicians to assess the full range of interpersonal trauma exposures and responses that youth may experience, and to provide impacted youth with trauma-focused evidence-based treatment. This webinar will describe assessment strategies and evidence-based interventions for interpersonal violence in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic across development, with a focus on 1) how to ask children about their trauma experiences and responses; 2) the use of Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) for young children and their parents/caregivers who experience interpersonal trauma in the wake of COVID-19; 3) features of problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) in children 12 years and younger, the critical role of parents in addressing these, and two evidence-based treatments for this population; and 4) the use of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for youth who experience interpersonal trauma including PSB and their non-offending parents/caregivers.

This webinar will introduce the FOCUS Family Resiliency Program, a brief evidence-based intervention that is among the most widely disseminated family-based programs for military populations, and will discuss general issues in adapting it with families who have a child with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It will introduce overall considerations in working with families and children with IDD, as well as how they may apply to the administration of FOCUS. This will be illustrated with a case description in which the FOCUS Program was adapted for a military family with a teenage daughter diagnosed with autism. The intervention was conducted several years after father’s deployment and during a period in which the family reported high levels of distress. We will discuss ways in which the family benefitted from the protocol, as well as what adjustments to the FOCUS modules proved effective in working with a child on the spectrum.
This webinar will detail how National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) researchers and practitioners with expertise in complex trauma and children partnered with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the New York State Department of Health to establish complex trauma in children as an eligible condition for health home coverage. This translation of research and practice into policy provides an enhanced treatment and financing benefit for children exposed to complex trauma. Learn how New York State put this concept into practice and generated a complex trauma referral workflow for this population of children.

Additionally, participants will learn how to be responsive to the cultural and linguistic needs of youth. Participants will learn children’s common fears and perceived threats to safety experienced by youth exposed to traumatic events as well as culturally responsive strategies for staff to use when working with youth.
In this webinar, a mother and her teenage daughter who have experienced severe family violence by an ex-husband/father in the past become embroiled in an intense verbal argument that escalates into sudden physical violence. Their therapist attempts to mediate the disagreement while not siding with either mother or daughter, and then must help the mother recover from shock and dissociation while simultaneously helping the daughter not run away and stay present in the room. Mother and daughter go through a complex series of emotional reactions (anger, fear, guilt, shame, grief) with the help of the therapist, and are able to make the shift from experiencing a flashback of violence to reconnecting with one another based on their core relationship.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) proposes to include a new grief disorder—Prolonged Grief Disorder—in its forthcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5-Text Revised (DSM-5-TR), which is scheduled for release in 2021. Members of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network have developed recommendations to make these diagnostic criteria more developmentally informed and helpful for providers who serve children and adolescents. This webinar will review the draft criteria, proposed developmental recommendations, and implications, risks, and opportunities that a new grief disorder can bring. The NCTSN encourages providers and members of the public to educate themselves about the newly-proposed grief disorder and to participate as informed consumers during a public comment period, which is scheduled for early April to mid-May 2020. This public comment period presents a critical opportunity to advocate for diagnostic criteria that are developmentally informed.

In this webinar, which follows the “Digital Diaries” format, we will meet Joshua, a young adult struggling to find his place in the world, and his therapist Dr. Michael Gomez. Joshua is a composite of several young men, but not an actual client, and is portrayed by an actor in order to protect privacy. Feeling like a “loner” most of his life, Josh has faced many difficulties while growing up. In addition to being abandoned by his mother and lacking a connection with his foster mother, Josh also has had a “love/hate” relationship with his father. In spite of this, he still longs to be part of a family and has been trying to reconnect with his father and his father’s new wife and kids (Josh’s half siblings).

In this webinar, Elana Newman and Bruce Shapiro provide an overview on how mental health professionals can work with journalists. They discuss the three challenges facing journalists covering disasters and terrorism and present ways mental health professionals can collaborate with the news media. Participants learn how to assess to what degree their current disaster plans are media-friendly. The presenters also provide participants with ways to describe and to plan at least one appropriate strategy to help journalists cover children and disasters. Throughout the webinar, the presenters stress the fact that journalists can collaborate with emergency responders, mental health providers, and officials if their role is respected.

This webinar will outline techniques for engaging families in affirming treatment and care of their LGBTQ youth, including a review of strategies used within the Family Acceptance Project (FAP) with founder Caitlin Ryan. FAP, a research-based prevention and intervention initiative, uses a culturally grounded framework to help diverse families support their LGBTQ children with decreasing health and mental health risks and promoting well-being. Practitioners will examine ways to engage in cultural humility and understanding when engaging families and youth in trauma treatment.

In this webinar, viewers meet James, a 16-year-old African American youth who has been living with his maternal uncle, Patrick, since he and his two younger sisters were removed from their biological parents three years ago when James reported to a teacher that his father physically abused him. The teacher filed a report with Child Protective Services (CPS), quickly leading to the removal of James and his two younger sisters (ages seven and nine at that time) from the family home. CPS has been the legal guardian of all three children ever since. CPS gave Patrick physical custody of James, but James’ sisters were placed with a foster family. Patrick believes James needs help and sends him to see Dr. Julian Ford. During his first telehealth session with Dr. Ford, James is skeptical about whether his older White therapist can understand what it’s like as a young African American man. Together, Dr. Ford and James discuss these differences. Their discussions allow James to open up and share some of his deep frustrations and fears, including how his experiences affect his sense of safety and trust and how Patrick can accept and support him as he navigates these complex issues.

To best serve children and families in times of disaster and terrorism, organizations should know how different types of events activate different resources and the conditions under which this happens.
